John Ruggles, originally from Westboro, began in business in Thomaston in 1810. He attended Brown University Law School and began his practice in Skowhegan in 1815. He returned to Thomaston in 1818 with his office at Mill River. He was elected Town Clerk in 1819. In 1828, he was on the first Board of the Thomaston Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
